Survey Monkey vs
Survey Everywhere

Different tools for different jobs — here's how to tell which one is yours.

SurveyMonkey is a familiar name, but that's where the advantage ends for institutional use — no native LMS integration, and per-response fees once a plan's cap is hit. Survey Everywhere replaces both problems directly: LTI 1.3 built into every subscription, and flat campus-wide pricing instead of paying per response.

The bottom line

Survey Everywhere is the better choice for campus-wide deployment, LMS-native distribution, course evaluations, and research instruments that need to run without response caps. SurveyMonkey is the better choice for quick, general-purpose surveys run by individuals or small teams, where ease of use and a familiar name matter most. The LMS gap is significant: Survey Everywhere integrates natively with Canvas, Blackboard, Brightspace, and Moodle; SurveyMonkey has no native LMS integration.

Which tool is right for you

The decision usually comes down to your use case, not the tools themselves. Here's a quick filter.

Choose...

Choose... comparison
Survey Everywhere if... Survey Monkey if...
Surveys need to launch from inside Canvas, Blackboard, Brightspace, or Moodle Your surveys are occasional and don't need to connect to an LMS
You need course evaluations tied to rosters, with department roll-ups You're an individual or small team that wants to start today on a self-serve plan
You want unlimited surveys and responses on one campus contract Name recognition with outside respondents matters (e.g., public or market surveys)
SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001 + 27701, and WCAG 2.2 AA are procurement requirements You need SurveyMonkey's broader ecosystem of templates and integrations outside higher ed
Research instruments need piped text, loop and merge, and SPSS export without tier upgrades Your survey volume is low enough that per-user pricing stays small

How each tool performs by scenario

Both tools can handle a research survey. The differences show up in specific conditions. Below is a direct comparison across six common campus use cases.

comparison
Scenario Survey Everywhere Survey Monkey
Course evaluations Yes — roster-aware delivery via LTI 1.3, anonymous aggregation by section, and department and college roll-ups. Limited — evaluation templates are available, but there is no roster or LMS connection. Distribution runs through email or links.
Faculty research study Yes — visual branching, piped text, loop and merge, and SPSS export. No response caps across longitudinal or cohort studies. Yes for simpler instruments — core logic works well, but advanced logic and SPSS export sit on higher tiers, and response caps apply.
Campus-wide deployment Yes — one fixed-price campus licence, role-based dashboards, SSO, and all four LMS integrations included. Possible on Enterprise — SSO and SCIM require Enterprise; there's no published campus licence, and seats add up across departments.
New-student outreach Yes — welcome surveys and orientation check-ins delivered where students already are, with completion tracking by cohort. Yes — easy to build and send by email. Tracking completion by course or cohort takes manual work.
Campus climate study Yes — multi-path logic, authenticated LMS or SAML responses, and anonymous aggregation where needed. Yes — works well for broad, anonymous distribution. Large response volumes can trigger plan limits or overage fees.
Alumni and advancement surveys Yes — branded surveys, RSVPs, and giving-interest segmentation from the same campus licence. Very well — one of SurveyMonkey's strongest use cases. Familiar to outside audiences and quick to launch.

Video transcript – Survey Everywhere

0:00 Hello and welcome back. Uh, so we're looking at the survey tool market. Uh, we're doing some comparisons. This is Survey Everywhere and as the CEO of Poll Everywhere, uh, I have in fact seen this.

0:13 We built this tool. Uh, so I can't do a fresh once through, uh, here. I just want to admit that off the top.

0:21 I can, however, uh, run you guys through a similar workflow and show you what it looks like. Uh, so, of course, if we wanted to make a survey here, I've already logged in.

0:31 Uh, that process I didn't do in any of the other tools. So, this is where we start. So, we have Surveys and we have Teams and we have Course Evals and Courses.

0:39 Courses, of course, are connected to the LMS and Participant Groups would be something that you uploaded if you didn't have an LMS connection.

0:45 Uh, so if if I wanted to make a new survey. Uh, I can, of course, create it with AI. I can do so manually.

0:53 Uh, I can import a Qualtrics file. Uh, I'm going to insert some text from the Berkeley, uh, Center for Teaching and Learning.

1:02 A course evaluation survey from this data site. And we're going to go ahead and use the AI, so the AI is going to show us, uh, the pieces that it's working through along the way.

1:36 Okay, so I'm going to move this out of our way and see where we are. Okay. So it looks like this, uhm, we have men 1 to max 5, so it looks like, uh, the scales came in here positively.

1:56 Of course, we could change these if we wanted to, to, you know, just for a kind. Uhm, it split this survey into some open-ended, uh, on the second page and the scale questions on one page.

2:09 I like that layout, and we can, of course, visualize our overall layout if we want to. Uh, these are the pages, and if we needed to, we could add some branching here so if we wanted to add some branching logic, so if we had, if we wanted to go to the end of the survey when, say, something on the first

2:33 survey, so if these are, uh, well-designed, so if this is five out of five, then maybe you just want to go ahead and say, uh, that's good enough.

2:43 Uh, so if this is a five out of five, then we're gonna go ahead and skip to the end of the survey.

2:49 Uh, and now we can see the branch takes us around to the end of the survey, and they wouldn't fill out the open-ended feedback.

2:56 You probably wouldn't want to do this specific change, but this just gives you an idea of, uh, how this can work.

3:05 So we go back to the editor, uh, that's still there. Um, and you see the branch logic over here. Uh, and it also shows up at the bottom here.

3:15 Um, there is, of course, you know, a variety of ways to, uh, to add things, uh, manually. Um, so if you wanted to do that, you could click here.

3:26 Uh, we could, say, add different types of questions. Um, you can also go back to the AI assistant and ask it to do things.

3:37 Um, the first three questions on page one, rating questions, rather than scale ones.

3:51 Uh, so this is just showing you that not only can you get a jump start in creating the content that you need, but, uh, you can also use the AI to make edits.

4:03 Uh, and it looks like we, uh, updated these. So, now we have rating questions. So these are rate out of five stars.

4:12 Uh, and if we liked that, we could, of course, change the whole thing. Uh, if we wanted to preview the difference, uh, then this is what this looks like.

4:22 So you go through one at a time and you rate. Uhm, and so I think this looks, you know, kind of like what I expected.

4:30 So we built a course evaluation survey pretty quickly here. And if we go ahead and publish this, uhm, we can make a public link for it as well.

4:39 Uh, we can name it Public CE1. Uh, we could limit it to the organization. And we could, uh, put it into a course if we wanted to, or limit it to a participation group.

4:55 We could limit the time period of course, that would make sense for most course evaluation surveys. But for this one, we're just making a quick link.

5:02 Uh, so then if we copy that link, and we wanted to go check that out, uh, now we can do our Reading?

5:13 And I'm not reading these questions, but I'm assuming that, uh, we just need to get some answers in here, so we can see some of the other pieces here, uhm, well, uh, Cheeseburger selection is really what did it for me.

5:37 Uh, and then as far as what one change would most improvement, uhm, Bacon, yeah, I think that's the answer in this case, so, it's important feedback for the instructor, and now we have completed this, and if we go ahead and close, uh, that window, uh, we can go back to our, Oh, well, that's editing.

6:00 I think we can go back to our. Our survey, uhm, and so that's in the distribute, if we go back to build, we can see it, but now we have some results.

6:09 So if we take a look at our results, uh, we got a couple of, uh, participants, only one completed it, looks like somebody else loaded the link, maybe when we clicked on it a second to go, and you can see how it how they replied, uhm, how the distribution looks, uh, you can see by color breakdown what

6:33 this looks like, we can see the, the feedback there, uhm, we can break this down by participants, of course, we can also look by question, uh, let's see, we want to look at these, you know, MediR, open response questions, we can do that, can of course, uh, execute export this, or put it into a PDF, uh

6:53 , and then you can use all sorts of different tools to, uh, report on that, how you want it to, SPSS, uh, you can put it into other packages, or like R as well, uh, and so that is, uh, putting together a course evaluation survey in Survey Everywhere, uh, we think that, uh, Atlassian, how it's connected

7:14 with the LMSs, built with those from the beginning, uh, some of the ease of use here, some of the design features, we really, we tried to find some of the best design ideas and surveys that we could, and combine those with some of the insights from higher education with our partners, uh, and we're really

7:32 excited about what we have for you guys, uh, and, yeah, that's gonna do it for today. Survey Everywhere, uhm, and hopefully you're as excited about this part of the platform as we are.

7:43 Thanks.

Video transcript – SurveyMonkey

0:00 Alright, welcome back again. Uh, here we are with SurveyMonkey. I just created an account, uh, it's on a free account so this is what I would be able to do to make a course evaluation in SurveyMonkey.

0:12 Uh, I haven't used SurveyMonkey in years. Uh, so this is pretty new to me. Uh, I did answer a few questions, setting up the accounts and who I was, what I was interested in and I did mention, I was interested in course evaluations.

0:26 So I think I'm gonna go ahead and use the survey the way that I did with both Microsoft and Google before and this is going to load up for us.

0:37 I'm going to move myself over here. So yeah, so we could do some branding though. Yeah, it looks like I have to do some uploading things.

0:49 Let's do some colors. Okay, it's nice to have a little style. Looks like we do have some logic options. Oh, but those appear to be, appear to be paid.

1:05 Well, maybe not. Okay. So maybe we can, Yeah, so we can do some page logic here. That's interesting. It's not necessarily paid.

1:24 cool so yeah we'll take a look at these questions if I wanted to add it one of these looks like we can add logic on these questions so we can send them to a disqualification oh it looks like I have added a paid feature okay so question logic appears to be oh okay so disqualification page is the thing

1:54 that's paid but we can send them to the service so I'll save that this is our question we can do for free so overall rating course materials instructor explanations speed well the answer questions I think that's close to feedback that's good and this is as well.

2:15 So I think these are pretty helpful and if I wanted to add content I could do that. I don't want to add content that way.

2:26 I can also chat to edit. Let's see. If I did this, how does that work? And let's see if we wanted to add some questions that we have inspired from other places.

2:54 It gave it a little too much context from my notes, and we'll see if it handles that. And so what I was really interested in, so Microsoft and Google for us not have this AI option, but it looks like it looks like serving like you absolutely does.

3:10 So we're able to add a couple of these questions. And now we're over our question limit. So we would have to take away some of these questions which is a little frustrating to use this delete yeah I'm afraid that I I don't know why I can't delete this maybe one of bit odd, but I got a couple of them

3:51 deleted and now I'm not over my question number. So I'm going to go ahead and publish this so that we can get a survey sent.

4:00 And then we'll see if we are happy with how this looks. If it prompts us to see the reporting, what the reporting looks like.

4:12 I'm going to pop in some answers to these questions. And I think I think I may have even left some things logic-wise in here, and I'm not sure what they'll do.

4:33 Okay, so I get a Red Cross prompt as I survey respond it there, which I can be okay with that.

4:44 It looks like I have some upgrade options, and can I go ahead and analyze results? Didn't prompt me the way that Microsoft Forms did, I need to upgrade in order to export, okay?

5:06 Certainly, in that case, I think, even if you're a non-profit or something like that, using this for a course and you're trying to keep the budget down.

5:14 I feel like being able to take it immediately to Excel or Google Sheets for free really would be necessary unless for some reason you wanted to use some other paid features of SurveyMonkey but if you're looking for a free tool I think this is probably disqualifying.

5:33 Yeah so it's just locked up but we're looking for data in some of these places. We've got bar charts here.

5:45 They're interesting. I thought that I had answered these, but perhaps not. Maybe I missed some of the questions. And yeah, I'm going to show you this floor response for Laura Mipsum is what I typed in.

6:01 Okay. And it looks like I can choose how I want to see these. So if I wanted to, I could go pie chart, and I could also see how people answered in choices.

6:16 Okay. I definitely like the donut over the pie chart. That's a long opinion that's an Edward Tufty type informed opinion as well in terms of data visualization.

6:28 It's a little easier to compare areas in donut charts versus angles in pie charts. But the bar charts are the default, so that's a small thing.

6:40 I think this looks all right. I love that I could use the AI very quickly to add some things and edit some things.

6:47 I think that kind of features incredibly handy at this point in 2026. And totally understandable if it's not part of your workflow.

6:59 but I think it's a great option for folks trying to edit complex surveys. It did look like we had the, not just the AI, but also some of the logic that you'd expect, but some of that was also paid.

7:14 Question count was limited, so there's some of the notes here. I don't believe that those were some of the limitations that we faced with Google and with Microsoft Forms, so that's going to do it for survey monkey but yeah I think this could absolutely work and particularly if you already have an account

7:32 I think it would be great. I probably slightly preferred their template here but still think Microsoft is my favorite reporting so so far.

Pricing and limits

Survey Everywhere:

Campus-wide deployments are priced better than other survey platforms, with greater savings when bundled with Poll Everywhere. Everything in the Pricing & Licensing table above is included in the campus licence.

Survey Monkey:

SurveyMonkey's free plan limits surveys to 10 questions and restricts how many responses you can view. Paid individual and team plans are priced per user, with annual response allowances and per-response overage fees above them. Team plans require at least three users, and SSO, SCIM, and HIPAA support require Enterprise. Education discounts apply to individual plans only.

What usually triggers a procurement conversation:

Procurement typically enters when multiple departments are paying for separate survey seats, when an LMS integration is required, or when SSO and security documentation are needed for a campus-wide rollout. The LMS Integration and Security & Administration tables above show where the gaps are. Confirm response allowances and overage terms when comparing side by side.

Switching between Survey Everywhere and Survey Monkey

Moving from Survey Monkey to Survey Everywhere:

Survey Everywhere can import surveys from other tools and uses AI to keep logic and page breaks intact as you move. Most teams review each migrated survey before launch; the main investment is time, not complexity. Past response data should be exported from SurveyMonkey before your plan ends.

Moving from Survey Everywhere to Survey Monkey:

Survey Everywhere results export cleanly to SPSS and Excel, but survey content does not import directly into SurveyMonkey. If your use case is shifting toward occasional, standalone surveys rather than LMS-connected ones, the tradeoff is losing roster-aware delivery and unlimited responses in exchange for a familiar self-serve tool.

What changes when the
caps come off

∞
unlimited surveys and responses on campus licences
4
native LMS integrations included, not sold separately
0
