Watermark vs
Survey Everywhere
Different tools for different jobs — here's how to tell which one is yours.
Watermark CES is a capable course-evaluation specialist, but it's narrowly scoped to that one use case and offers no way to try it before a full institutional contract. Survey Everywhere covers course evaluations with the same native LTI 1.3 depth, plus climate studies, alumni outreach, and staff engagement on the same platform — at a flat price, not a closed-door quote.
Author Transparency Note: This comparison was written by Survey Everywhere. We've aimed to give an honest account of where Watermark performs better, and where it doesn't. For the full picture across all [eight] tools in this category, see the hub page.
The bottom line
Survey Everywhere is the better choice for campuses that want course evaluations and research-grade surveys on one platform, with flexible logic, clean exports, and fixed pricing. Watermark Course Evaluations & Surveys is the better choice for US institutions that want a dedicated evaluation system with proven response-rate tools, SIS integration, and connections to Watermark's faculty activity and accreditation products. The reporting gap is significant: Survey Everywhere exports clean datasets to SPSS and Excel in one click; Watermark users widely report that exporting data is challenging.

Which tool is right for you
The decision usually comes down to your use case, not the tools themselves. Here's a quick filter.
Choose...
| Survey Everywhere if... | Watermark if... |
|---|---|
| You want course evaluations and research-grade surveys on one platform and one contract | Course evaluation is the whole job, and you want a dedicated system for it |
| Researchers need piped text, loop and merge, and SPSS-ready exports | You already use Watermark Faculty Success or Planning & Self-Study for accreditation |
| Faculty and staff should build their own surveys without training | Your SIS is Ellucian Banner or Colleague and you want evaluations fed directly from it |
| AI-assisted creation and analysis should be included, not an add-on | Proven in-LMS response-rate tools are the top priority |
| ISO 27001 + 27701 certification is a procurement requirement | TX-RAMP or an existing Watermark contract simplifies procurement |
How each tool performs by scenario
Both tools can handle a research survey. The differences show up in specific conditions. Below is a direct comparison across six common campus use cases.
| Scenario | Survey Everywhere | Watermark |
|---|---|---|
| Course evaluations | Yes — roster-aware delivery via LTI 1.3, anonymous aggregation by section, and department and college roll-ups. | Very well — Watermark's strongest use case. In-LMS prompts lift response rates; hierarchy and permission setup can be confusing at first. |
| Faculty research study | Yes — visual branching, piped text, loop and merge, and SPSS export, with no response caps. | Limited — built for evaluations and institutional surveys rather than individual research instruments. |
| Campus-wide deployment | Yes — fixed-price campus license, role-based dashboards, SSO, and all four LMS integrations included. | Yes — widely deployed across US institutions, with roughly 60 days to full deployment. |
| New-student outreach | Yes — welcome surveys and orientation check-ins delivered inside the LMS, with completion tracking by cohort. | Yes — supported as an institutional survey; SMS reminders are available. |
| Campus climate study | Yes — multi-path logic, authenticated LMS or SAML responses, and anonymous aggregation where needed. | Yes for standard instruments — less flexible for complex, multi-path designs. |
| Alumni and advancement surveys | Yes — branded surveys, RSVPs, and giving-interest segmentation from the same campus licence. | Possible — supported, though advancement teams often use a separate tool. |

Video transcript – Survey Everywhere
0:00 Hello and welcome back. Uh, so we're looking at the survey tool market. Uh, we're doing some comparisons. This is Survey Everywhere and as the CEO of Poll Everywhere, uh, I have in fact seen this.
0:13 We built this tool. Uh, so I can't do a fresh once through, uh, here. I just want to admit that off the top.
0:21 I can, however, uh, run you guys through a similar workflow and show you what it looks like. Uh, so, of course, if we wanted to make a survey here, I've already logged in.
0:31 Uh, that process I didn't do in any of the other tools. So, this is where we start. So, we have Surveys and we have Teams and we have Course Evals and Courses.
0:39 Courses, of course, are connected to the LMS and Participant Groups would be something that you uploaded if you didn't have an LMS connection.
0:45 Uh, so if if I wanted to make a new survey. Uh, I can, of course, create it with AI. I can do so manually.
0:53 Uh, I can import a Qualtrics file. Uh, I'm going to insert some text from the Berkeley, uh, Center for Teaching and Learning.
1:02 A course evaluation survey from this data site. And we're going to go ahead and use the AI, so the AI is going to show us, uh, the pieces that it's working through along the way.
1:36 Okay, so I'm going to move this out of our way and see where we are. Okay. So it looks like this, uhm, we have men 1 to max 5, so it looks like, uh, the scales came in here positively.
1:56 Of course, we could change these if we wanted to, to, you know, just for a kind. Uhm, it split this survey into some open-ended, uh, on the second page and the scale questions on one page.
2:09 I like that layout, and we can, of course, visualize our overall layout if we want to. Uh, these are the pages, and if we needed to, we could add some branching here so if we wanted to add some branching logic, so if we had, if we wanted to go to the end of the survey when, say, something on the first
2:33 survey, so if these are, uh, well-designed, so if this is five out of five, then maybe you just want to go ahead and say, uh, that's good enough.
2:43 Uh, so if this is a five out of five, then we're gonna go ahead and skip to the end of the survey.
2:49 Uh, and now we can see the branch takes us around to the end of the survey, and they wouldn't fill out the open-ended feedback.
2:56 You probably wouldn't want to do this specific change, but this just gives you an idea of, uh, how this can work.
3:05 So we go back to the editor, uh, that's still there. Um, and you see the branch logic over here. Uh, and it also shows up at the bottom here.
3:15 Um, there is, of course, you know, a variety of ways to, uh, to add things, uh, manually. Um, so if you wanted to do that, you could click here.
3:26 Uh, we could, say, add different types of questions. Um, you can also go back to the AI assistant and ask it to do things.
3:37 Um, the first three questions on page one, rating questions, rather than scale ones.
3:51 Uh, so this is just showing you that not only can you get a jump start in creating the content that you need, but, uh, you can also use the AI to make edits.
4:03 Uh, and it looks like we, uh, updated these. So, now we have rating questions. So these are rate out of five stars.
4:12 Uh, and if we liked that, we could, of course, change the whole thing. Uh, if we wanted to preview the difference, uh, then this is what this looks like.
4:22 So you go through one at a time and you rate. Uhm, and so I think this looks, you know, kind of like what I expected.
4:30 So we built a course evaluation survey pretty quickly here. And if we go ahead and publish this, uhm, we can make a public link for it as well.
4:39 Uh, we can name it Public CE1. Uh, we could limit it to the organization. And we could, uh, put it into a course if we wanted to, or limit it to a participation group.
4:55 We could limit the time period of course, that would make sense for most course evaluation surveys. But for this one, we're just making a quick link.
5:02 Uh, so then if we copy that link, and we wanted to go check that out, uh, now we can do our Reading?
5:13 And I'm not reading these questions, but I'm assuming that, uh, we just need to get some answers in here, so we can see some of the other pieces here, uhm, well, uh, Cheeseburger selection is really what did it for me.
5:37 Uh, and then as far as what one change would most improvement, uhm, Bacon, yeah, I think that's the answer in this case, so, it's important feedback for the instructor, and now we have completed this, and if we go ahead and close, uh, that window, uh, we can go back to our, Oh, well, that's editing.
6:00 I think we can go back to our. Our survey, uhm, and so that's in the distribute, if we go back to build, we can see it, but now we have some results.
6:09 So if we take a look at our results, uh, we got a couple of, uh, participants, only one completed it, looks like somebody else loaded the link, maybe when we clicked on it a second to go, and you can see how it how they replied, uhm, how the distribution looks, uh, you can see by color breakdown what
6:33 this looks like, we can see the, the feedback there, uhm, we can break this down by participants, of course, we can also look by question, uh, let's see, we want to look at these, you know, MediR, open response questions, we can do that, can of course, uh, execute export this, or put it into a PDF, uh
6:53 , and then you can use all sorts of different tools to, uh, report on that, how you want it to, SPSS, uh, you can put it into other packages, or like R as well, uh, and so that is, uh, putting together a course evaluation survey in Survey Everywhere, uh, we think that, uh, Atlassian, how it's connected
7:14 with the LMSs, built with those from the beginning, uh, some of the ease of use here, some of the design features, we really, we tried to find some of the best design ideas and surveys that we could, and combine those with some of the insights from higher education with our partners, uh, and we're really
7:32 excited about what we have for you guys, uh, and, yeah, that's gonna do it for today. Survey Everywhere, uhm, and hopefully you're as excited about this part of the platform as we are.
7:43 Thanks.

Video transcript – Watermark
0:01 All right. Welcome to our survey software roundup. We've been going through all types of survey software. Uh, we have landed right now today on our last one.
0:12 This is a watermark. Many of you may be familiar with it. Uh, it is a pretty advanced piece of survey technology.
0:21 Um, put it up there with the Exploreance Blue and Qualtrics as something that's for enterprise. Uh, we've of course been going through all these products and making a course evaluation.
0:31 survey. Unfortunately with watermark similar to Explorance, I can't find a way to do that on a trial. I'm not going to falsely request a demo.
0:42 But I did find some video here of a demo. Someone else is done. It's not a specific course evaluation. But it is the product in use.
0:54 And they're using it inside I think of a configured course. and they're allowing someone to submit a portfolio of files in response to an assignment essentially inside of this course.
1:09 So I can't say that I know all of the context here of how Watermark works and I don't plan to play into the audio for you but I do think we can skip through this a bit and I'll go ahead and mute it but we can skip through this a bit.
1:27 I'll show you some screens as we go. So I think this is just getting set up for finding where the assignments are.
1:36 And so when we jump into an assignment, we find that there's a required submission of a portfolio. And so when we get in there, we're going to select a portfolio, we need to create one.
1:48 So we go through this process and there's a very complex questionnaire. It's pretty text heavy, but certainly, this is, I believe, the College of St.
2:02 Rose has this demo on YouTube, which is really handy to see how some of this is put together, but this has many pages, many sections, and of course, as you click through it, you get to the end and you're looking to upload the files, like I pointed out.
2:26 And some of the things we're seeing here, I feel, you know, compared to the one I just got off of, just a bit more blocky, a bit more dated, a bit more spreadsheet feel.
2:37 This one does have some blocky elements, but also the choice of color palette is a bit less stark. I feel like it feels a little bit more buttoned up a little bit more modern than the one I was looking at a few minutes ago.
2:54 The elements are a little bit bigger in size, it's a little bit easier to read. So I think there are some design points here for me, and I think some of these buttons are a little bit more modern.
3:08 The iconography is familiar, and I'm kind of jumping around here to just try to get to some of the next steps.
3:16 So there's many pages to this process in the survey. And we upload some files. We find some files over here that we can upload.
3:28 It looks like maybe we're actually building out that upload. And then we've established this portfolio. And then there's actually quite a sequence of steps in order to re-navigate to the assignments and select which portfolio we wanted to submit.
3:45 it and then to make sure it gets attached and make sure it's saved and I believe going back and confirming that this is what we wanted or something along those lines.
4:03 There were quite a few steps here that were a little bit opaque to me as to why there were so many.
4:11 But eventually we get through those steps. And I think this has a lot more to do with watermark and its design and not necessarily the College of St.
4:28 Rose, but it's possible the College of St. Rose just has some requirements that I'm sure the text heavy nature of this initial slide is related to what they're trying to describe here but the visuals and the sequence of confirmations I think some of that has to do with water market self and that would
4:48 be the only design element here that it takes some points off for I feel like the elements the layout the use of space here is a bit better than some of the other things that we have used and you know if you're comparing it against something like Qualtrics you know it's bit heavier and appearance, Qualtrics
5:05 is kind of very simplified, you know, layout and visual. It is even Spartan at times, but it's very clear. This one I think is a bit more visually appealing though it does kind of break up the grid in places, the alignments, a little, you know, less pure then Qualtrics, but compared to some of the free
5:31 tools and compared to some of the other heavyweight tools like Explorance Blue, it does feel, you know, a half step above those, the Explorance in particular in terms of design and feel for me, but Explorance also felt from what I could find, like it had just really remarkable configurability.
5:54 So I'm speculating a little bit on this one. I'm afraid this was the best I could find the product in use.
6:02 And so some of these elements, I'm not sure how much of it is the way the college has the setup and versus the way that watermark itself works.
6:11 But I think some of these design elements are watermark. I think some of the confirmation steps are probably watermark. And I do think it would be nice just to have one submission step and not as a sequence of saves and selections in order to submit that portfolio.
6:29 So that would be my main hang-up with what we could see here, but I will admit that that's a little bit speculative in terms of how we got there.
6:37 And just props to the College of St. Rose for a really complete piece of documentation for their users. I think colleges do this really well, and this one is no exception.
6:49 So that'll be all for this one with Watermark. and yeah thanks everybody we'll see you in the next one
Pricing and limits
Survey Everywhere:
Campus-wide deployments are priced better than other survey platforms, with greater savings when bundled with Poll Everywhere. Everything in the Pricing & Licensing table above is included in the campus license.
Watermark:
Watermark Course Evaluations & Surveys is priced by custom quote based on institution size, and pricing is not published. There's no free trial. The AI add-on for comment analysis and instructor insights is an extra cost and currently limited to English and US institutions.
What usually triggers a procurement conversation:
Procurement typically enters at contract renewal, when research teams need more flexible surveys, or when a campus wants to consolidate evaluations and general surveys under one vendor. Watermark's HECVAT is available on request. Confirm ISO certification status, WCAG level, and add-on pricing when comparing side by side.
Switching between Survey Everywhere and Watermark
Moving from Watermark to Survey Everywhere:
Survey Everywhere can import surveys from other tools and uses AI to keep logic and page breaks intact as you move. Evaluation instruments usually rebuild quickly; the larger task is mapping your course and department structure to LMS rosters. Pull historical results from Watermark's reports or REST API before your contract ends.
Moving from Survey Everywhere to Watermark:
Survey Everywhere results export cleanly to SPSS and Excel, but survey content does not import directly into Watermark. If your needs are shifting toward evaluations tied to accreditation workflows, the tradeoff is losing research-grade logic and flexible exports in exchange for Watermark's evaluation ecosystem.
